Working Titles
Posted By Vonna on November 30, 2009
A frequent topic of conversation among my writing friends is the title of our works in progress. Sometimes a title jumps right out, but other times it can be a struggle to find something catchy that is a good fit for the manuscript. I did a little research this week to see who else has this problem. I’ve posted my findings on a few recent releases below (the working titles were culled from Publishers Marketplace):
What about you? Do you struggle with titles occasionally? What other books can you think of that started their professional life with a different name?

Fun comparison, Vonna! I love seeing how titles are changed!
Wow, those are some major changes!
Very interesting, Vonna — and topical for me. I was in the bookshop a couple of days ago and saw Todd MacCaffrey has a book out called Dragonheart, which is the working title for one of my WIPs. Guess I won’t be using that if it ever gets published! But it’s reassuring to know that so many books get their titles changed during the publishing process. No point getting too wedded to your working title if that’s the case.
Hi Marina, thanks for dropping in.
Yes, with so much fantasy out there, including video games, it can be tough to come up with something that hasn’t been used.
Ha! Title troubles, yes. The novel that attracted my agent’s interest is now on sub… with a completely different title. To be honest, with a”placeholder” title. We know it’ll change, when and if…
I look forward to hearing how your novel is faring, Nikki. I’ll keep an eye on your blog for updates. Let us know here, too.
