This Coral Snake, a pretty but unwelcome visitor to our backyard, was squirming along our pool deck one morning. We get accustomed to the wooded yard and tend to forget these little land mines are hiding under the leaf litter. This is only the third one I’ve seen in the seventeen years we have lived in this house. It’s a good reminder to wear shoes and heavy gardening gloves when weeding flowerbeds.
Coral snakes don’t have fangs, so they’re not likely to bite a human long enough to cause serious harm, but now that we have a dog, we’ll have to keep a sharp eye out to make sure she doesn’t think these funny squirming things are chew toys!
