Fall conference deadlines are rapidly approaching! There is still time to sign up for critiques with local authors for the SCBWI-Houston conference in October. If you’ve never had a critique before, this is a fun, nonthreatening way to get expert feedback on your children’s or young adult manuscript. But hurry, the slots are filling up fast! If you are curious about self-publishing, the Houston Writers Guild’s Indiepalooza on September 23 & 24 is your opportunity to learn all about it. Registration is still open! Registration is also still open for Houston Bay Area RWA’s Starfish Conference on September 17, featuring best-selling urban fantasy author Jaye Wells.

Happy Book Birthday!
This has been a fantastic year for SCBWI-New York member and former SCBWI Blue Board moderator DIANA MURRAY. This week, Diana celebrates the release of her third picture book in 2016! Congratulations, Diana!

From the publisher: The crew of the pirate ship the “Rusty Heap” are a fearsome bunch They’re tougher than gristle and barnacle grit. They heave and they ho and they swab and they . . . knit?
Well, one of them does, at least. Unfortunately for Ned, his knitting doesn’t go over well with the captain and crew. They urge him to hide his hobby and strive to be scurvier, like pirates should be. But when the briny ocean beast shows up to feast on the Rusty Heap and its crew, maybe Ned’s knitting is just the ticket to save the day!
If you hop over to Roaring Brook Press’s site, you can scroll though some of the delightful illustrations!
