I had such a good time at the SCBWI Houston conference this weekend. Many thanks to the wonderful editors, art director, and agents who were on our faculty: Karen Jacobs, Susan Dominick, Maria Middleton, Brianne Johnson, Ginger Clark, and Kelly Sonnack. And thanks to the dedicated staff, authors, illustrators, volunteers, and to everyone who participated in this year’s conference!
Here’s this week’s news. Scroll down for the conference updates.
Happy Book Birthday!
Today is celebration day for another long-time member of the SCBWI Discussion boards, Anne Marie Pace, author of VAMPIRINA BALLERINA, which is being made into a series on Disney Junior.

From the Publisher:
Pigloo is an explorer. His destination? The North Pole. Big sister Paisley has doubts about Pigloo’s plan, but Pigloo knows that explorers have to be patient as well as brave. When Pigloo takes his sled to the top of a hill, he sets off on his expedition–with a little unexpected help.
This sweet, expressively illustrated story shows that sometimes the greatest adventures are the ones that happen in your own backyard.

This workshop led by Joshua Foster will focus on practical strategies and approaches to the basic elements of fiction, including plot, structure, characterization, point of view, dialogue, and style. Sessions will include generative writing exercises, short lectures and discussion on craft elements, and, most importantly, workshopping of story drafts. Our goal will be for all attending writers to have completed new pages and to have generated such momentum and drive that we continue writing on our own once workshop ends. While this course will refer to literary short stories as models, participants may choose to submit any genre of prose writing, including but not limited to memoir, creative nonfiction, personal essay, science fiction, mystery, and young adult fiction.

Feeling stuck? Have you not written in a while? Join instructor Layla Al-Bedawi and fellow writers in a friendly, open atmosphere in which creative freedom is celebrated. Using writing prompts, visual inspiration, and fun freewriting exercises, we will unleash your creativity so you can get back on track and feel inspired again. The exercises we will share are intended to help spark new ideas, but they are also adaptable to works-in-progress, so feel free to come without a particular project in mind or with a current project you’d like to be excited by again. NOTE: This Jumpstart Your Writing workshop will be inspired by Halloween themes, so please be prepared to do some spooky and/or ghastly writing.
